Which chimney part is being discussed?
These terms describe parts of the chimney. They help name a finding, but they do not diagnose a condition or show whether a part is suitable.

| Part | Where it sits | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| Cap | Over a flue opening | A separate cover, rather than the whole chimney top. |
| Crown | Masonry top around the flue openings | Distinct from the cap and roof junction. |
| Flashing | Roof/chimney junction | One component group to consider in water-entry assessment. |
| Masonry | Brick and mortar chimney body | Condition and proposed joint/brick work need assessment. |
| Flue and liner | Internal vent passage and its lining | Internal questions need appropriate system evaluation. |
Does one replacement solve every leak?
No. Different components and entry routes need separate assessment. A wet spot inside the house or a photo taken from the ground cannot show which part is involved.
Keep roof, liner and structural questions separate from a guessed cap or mortar repair. Ask the professional which component was identified and what work is actually proposed.
