KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT

After a chimney fire, keep the system out of use

A chimney fire can cause damage you cannot see from the living room. The most important decision is to act on emergency steps first, then keep the chimney out of use until a qualified professional has swept and evaluated the system.

01

Is there immediate danger now?

If a fire is active or the situation is urgent, leave the home and call 911. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, get outside to fresh air immediately, then call 911.

Do not wait for this website form or a quote during either situation. Emergency response comes before any routine chimney decision.

02

Can the chimney be used once the fire is out?

CSIA advises keeping the chimney out of use until it has been professionally swept and evaluated. Hidden damage can remain even when the fire is out and the fireplace looks clean.

A visual check by a homeowner does not establish that the system is safe to reuse. Depending on what the professional finds, further internal evaluation may be needed before anyone uses it again.

03

What the professional should explain

  • Ask for the findings and any photos included with the evaluation.
  • Ask which areas were accessible and which could not be inspected.
  • Clarify any further evaluation or repair recommendations before reuse decisions.
  • Keep the report, stated limitations and agreed next steps together.
